Recent developments in Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies, show how higher petrol prices can ripple through the wider economy

DON’T MISS THIS:Top 10 African countries with the lowest fuel prices in August 2026

In Nigeria, petrol prices have climbed to around ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, while prices in some northern states have reached about ₦1,500 per litre

The increases are adding to the cost of transportation at a time when households are already facing elevated living expenses

An earlier report also showed that the West African country’s petrol import bill jumped nearly elevenfold to approximately $700 million (N952.15 billion) in the second quarter of 2026

The figure increased by 989.4% from N87.4 billion in the first quarter, according to the National Bureau of Statistics’ foreign-trade report for the second quarter of 2026

Petrol was Nigeria’s largest imported commodity during the period and accounted for 6.6% of the country’s total import bill of N14.42 trillion

The problem is particularly significant for African economies because road transport remains central to the movement of people, food and merchandise

A rise in petrol prices can therefore spread across the economy, from farmers and manufacturers to retailers and households

With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the highest fuel prices in September 2026, according to data from GlobalPetrolPrices

Compared to last month’s list, when the global average price of petrol was 1.53 U.S. dollars per liter, as opposed to 1.59 U.S. dollars per liter this month, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Cape Verde, and Uganda increased marginally

While prices for the Central African Republic, Seychelles, and Senegal reduced slightly. Kenya ousted Morocco from the list of most expensive countries to buy fuel in Africa this month
