The Federal Government has set a target of creating one million export-linked jobs by 2030 through the Hire From Nigeria campaign, as the country seeks to expand its share of the rapidly growing global outsourcing market
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the target at the global launch of the campaign in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly
Shettima, whose address was delivered by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, said the global out coming years
He noted that Nigeria’s large population of young, digitally skilled and English-speaking workers positioned the country to benefit from increasing global demand for talent
Describing global outsourcing as “one of the great transfers of opportunity in modern economic history,” Shettima said Africa’s share of the market remained relatively small
“Nigeria is the next frontier for global outsourcing,” he said
The Hire From Nigeria campaign is a private sector-led, government-supported initiative designed to connect Nigerian professionals, skilled workers, digital experts, creatives and service providers with international employers, clients and markets
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, said the campaign aligned with the government’s priorities on youth employment, job creation, services and digital trade
She explained that the government was collaborating with the private sector to transform Nigeria’s talent pipeline and position the country to capture opportunities in the global services market
Similarly, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said Nigeria missed the first wave of outsourcing 25 to 30 years ago but was determined to avoid repeating that experience
He noted that ongoing education reforms were focused on equipping Nigerians with relevant skills to provide solutions and generate income in the global economy
President and Co-founder of Tech4Dev, Joel Ogunsola, said Africa’s outsourcing market was growing three times faster than comparable global markets
He disclosed that an estimated 20,000 Nigerians were already employed by domestic and international outsourcing companies in areas such as customer operations, technology, data and specialised services
According to him, the campaign would improve the visibility of Nigerian talent among international employers, build trust and facilitate connections between skilled workers and employment opportunities
The campaign was nationally launched in Abuja on August 31 and is being championed by Tech4Dev and Univelcity in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment through the National Talent Export Program
