The Nigerian Railway Corporation’s (NRC) Port Harcourt-Aba train service is providing traders and small business owners with an alternative route toses for resale across Rivers State

Operating on the existing narrow-gauge railway line, the service connects Port Harcourt in Rivers State with Aba in Abia State, two cities with established commercial links. The train runs from Tuesday to Saturday, offering passengers another transport option for business trips between the two cities

Aba is one of southeastern Nigeria’s major trading and manufacturing centres, attracting merchants who buy clothing, footwear, fabrics, household goods, foodstuffs and automobile spare parts for resale. Its commercial hubs include Ariaria International Market, Shopping Plaza and other wholesale and retail markets

The Aba Halt area, associated with Cemetery Market, also serves traders sourcing stockfish, food items and other merchandise

For business owners in Port Harcourt, access to these markets can support stock replenishment and connect retailers with manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors operating in Aba. Traders who buy goods in bulk for resale may use the rail service as an alternative to road transport, depending on fares, journey times, schedules and the convenience of carrying their merchandise

In Port Harcourt, markets such as Oil Mill, Creek Road, Mile 1, Mile 3 and Rumuokoro serve traders whose supply networks extend beyond Rivers State. Automobile spare parts dealers at Ikoku Market also operate within a wider regional trading network

The rail connection could therefore provide another travel option for business operators who regularly visit Aba to purchase stock. However, the extent of its benefit to individual traders depends on the cost and reliability of the service, as well as how easily passengers can transport their goods to and from the stations

The route also serves passengers travelling between the two cities for purposes beyond trade. Communities across Rivers State, including Eleme, Okrika, Emohua, Ahoada and parts of Ogoni, may benefit from connections through Port Harcourt, alongside travellers from neighbouring states

The service highlights the potential of existing railway infrastructure to support economic activity without waiting for entirely new rail lines to be built. Where services are reliable and convenient, rail connections can help people reach commercial centres and maintain business relationships across state boundaries

Under its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kayode Opeifa, the NRC has emphasised improving service delivery and making better use of available railway assets

For the Port Harcourt-Aba corridor, consistent scheduling, accessible travel information, passenger convenience and suitable arrangements for carrying goods could influence how useful the service becomes to traders and other passengers

There may also be opportunities to explore freight and logistics services along the corridor, depending on infrastructure capacity, operational requirements and commercial demand. Such services could provide an additional option for moving goods between the two commercial centres if they prove

The train service offers traders another way to travel between Port Harcourt and Aba, where manufacturers and wholesalers supply products sold in markets across the region. Its contribution to local businesses will depend on whether the service provides a practical, reliable and cost-effective option for sourcing goods and reaching customers
