The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intra-African trade by expanding its partnership with Afreximbank to improve trade facilitation, modernise customs operations and accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)

The commitment was reaffirmed during a working visit by the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank to the Comptroller-General of Customs at the Service Headquarters in Abuja

The meeting reviewed progress on existing collaborations and explored new areas of cooperation aimed at promoting seamless cross-border trade and advancing regional economic integration

Speaking during the meeting, the Comptroller-General of Customs said the partnership is built on a shared vision of unlocking Africa’s economic potential by increasing trade among African countries

He noted that the collaboration is focused on making Africa’s economies stronger by encouraging greater trade within the continent rather than relying heavily on external markets

According to him, the partnership will support Afreximbank’s regional transit initiatives, speed up the establishment of one-stop border posts along major trade corridors and promote global best practices in customs administration

He added that the Nigeria Customs Service is already benefiting from the bank’s support for regional transit systems and expressed confidence that the collaboration would improve Africa’s competitiveness while facilitating legitimate cross-border trade

The Afreximbank President commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its leadership in promoting trade across the continent, describing the engagement as a demonstration of the agency’s commitment to transforming African trade

He expressed confidence that the partnership would deliver meaningful results, noting that Afreximbank has the financial re needed to drive implementation

The meeting also reviewed the maiden edition of the Customs Partnership for African Cooperation in Trade (C-PACT), held in Abuja in November 2025

The initiative brought together customs administrations, development partners and private sector stakeholders to harmonise customs procedures, strengthen institutional capacity and improve connectivity across Africa’s trading systems

For MSMEs, stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and Afreximbank could simplify cross-border trade, reduce delays at borders and create more opportunities for small businesses to access regional markets under the AfCFTA. Improved trade facilitation could also lower the cost of exporting goods and strengthen the competitiveness of African businesses
