Unlike the better-known golden visa programmes in Europe and the Caribbean, Africa’s options often link residency to business activity, recurring income or a commitment to the local economy rather than simply buying property

The attraction extends beyond residency, with some destinations offering tropical island lifestyles, established private healthcare, international schools, lower living costs and access to major African business hubs

Here are six options

Mauritius requires foreigners applying for an Investor Occupation Permit to make an initial investment of at least $100,000 following reforms introduced in 2026

Businesses must subsequently meet turnover requirements, including at least MUR5 million annually from the third year and MUR8 million from the fifth year to qualify for renewal

The island can appeal to investorswho want more than a business permit. Mauritius combines an established financial-services industry with beaches, a tropical climate and both public and private healthcare

The government provides free public healthcare while private hospitals and clinics operate across the island

Mauritius ranks 26th globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, giving citizens access to about 148 destinations without a prior visa and placing it second in Africa behind Seychelles

Kenya’s Class G permit is designed for foreigners establishing a business, consultancy, trade or professional operation

Applicants must show at least $100,000 available for investment and pay a KSh20,000 processing fee plus KSh250,000 annually, although East African Community nationals are exempt

Kenya is one of East Africa’s leading business and fintech hubs, while Nairobi hosts major companies, a large UN presence, international schools and a sizeable private healthcare sector

Residents also have access to Nairobi National Park, the coast and major safari destinations, while Kenya’s passport ranks around 68th globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index

Rwanda takes a different approach

Foreign entrepreneurs can obtain permits for businesses spanning technology, manufacturing, agriculture, hospitality, logistics and other industries, with immigration authorities not publishing a universal minimum capital requirement for several categories

New applicants need business registration, police clearance and supporting documents, with permits costing Rwf150,000 and lasting up to two years, or five years for qualifying repeat applicants

Kigali adds to the appeal with its cleanliness, security, lighter traffic and pleasant climate, while Rwanda continues investing in healthcare and universal coverage

DON’T MISS:Ethiopia, Nigeria and Rwanda lead the top 10 African countries with the lowest income needed to reach ‘peak happiness’ in 2026

Seychelles offers a five-year residence permit to eligible foreigners who have a family connection to the country or can demonstrate that they have made, or intend to make, a special economic, social or cultural contribution

The main applicant pays SCR150,000 plus a processing fee and must provide a bank guarantee of at least SCR20,000, while working requires a separate Gainful Occupation Permit

Seychelles combines a tropical island lifestyle and access to healthcare with Africa’s strongest passport, ranked 23rd globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index with access to 155 destinations without a prior visa

South Africa offers an option for people who have sufficient recurring income but do not want to put $100,000 into a business

Applicants for a retired person’s visa must demonstrate pension, annuity, investment or other qualifying income of at least R37,000 per month

For Americans or Europeans considering retirement abroad, South Africa’s attraction includes its climate, coastline, wine regions, wildlife and comparatively sophisticated private medical sector

InterNations’ 2026 survey ranked South Africa third for climate and second for its natural environment, while its passport ranks around 49th globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index with access to 101 destinations without a prior visa

Cabo Verde grants temporary residence to foreigners undertaking qualifying investment or economically significant activity

Rather than setting one universal minimum amount, authorities accept evidence of an approved investment, external investor status, an eligible company or an activity recognised as being in the national interest

The standard residence permit fee for most applicants outside the Portuguese-speaking community is CVE6,400

Cabo Verde combines Atlantic island living and a strong tourism economy with democratic stability, scoring 92 out of 100 in Freedom House’s latest assessment and maintaining a record of peaceful political transitions

That can make it attractive to retirees, remote professionals and entrepreneurs who prioritise political stability and island living over access to a large metropolitan economy

These programmes are not African versions of Caribbean citizenship-by-investment schemes

A $100,000 investment in Kenya or Mauritius does not buy a passport, while obtaining residency in Seychelles, Rwanda, South Africa or Cabo Verde also does not automatically give access to the passport rankings attached to those countries

But for Americans facing high housing or healthcare costs, Europeans seeking warmer climates and international entrepreneurs from Asia looking for an African commercial base, the continent offers a growing range of alternatives
